Learn to Speak Chinese - 5 Speaking Tips

1. Speak Daily You know the old saying, "practice makes perfect." Well, it's pretty close to the truth. You will never be able to speak Chinese perfectly, but you will be able to come pretty close if you'll take the time to practice every single day. Yes, you are busy, but if you are at all serious, you'll find the time. The more you speak the easier it will be to remember vocabulary and speak fluent Chinese.

2. Read Out Loud Use your course materials (note:if you haven't found a good course yet, keep reading and I'll tell you where to find one) or a story book that's in Chinese and read it aloud as part of your daily speaking practice. Since you are reading this, you are probably an adult and beyond reading story books for your own pleasure, but trust me, I've learned more from my two-year old's Chinese only story books than I have from most of my text books. And having a kid that is bilingual really motivates me to learn because everyday he's picking up and saying words that I do not understand. Your local library or an online book retailer will most likely have such books available.

3. Imitate A Native Speaker Any good Chinese learning course should have audio material spoken by a native. Repeat what they say. Pause the audio if necessary. Repeat. Repeat again. You may feel silly but it will help you. Try to say it just as they are. If you have video, all the better. Watch how their mouth moves as they say the words.

4. Sing Find a song in Chinese, get the lyrics, translate them into pin yin and sing away. Yes, it's a lot of work. Just translating the first song that I learned took over ten hours, but I learned dozens of new words and became proficient at using my Chinese-English dictionary.

5. Practice With A Native Speaker If you are in a large city you are likely to have a diverse population, including ethnic Chinese. The only trouble is that Mandarin Chinese might not be their first language as China has dozens of dialects which are still widely used. But they should have a good grasp on Mandarin, so head to the local university, Asian buffet, or Chinatown and strike up a conversation with someone. alternatively you could place an ad online looking for a conversation partner if you are too shy to try that last idea.
