I myself love modern Chinese literature more. Chinese modern literature appears easier to understand in terms of its superficial meaning. And another very important thing in it is that this kind of art form tells people how Chinese people live and think in modern times, and it injects a new kind of ideology to Chinese people. Ancient Chinese literature maybe think that the highest sovereign is emperor of the nation. But modern Chinese literature thinks that people should be equal and everyone is important. It pursues peace and freedom. From all kinds of art forms people can feel this idea.

Certainly one form in modern Chinese literature is very difficult to digest. It is poetry. Modern literature more stresses the meaning of the peom. People always use their feelings to compose. So if you need to read Chinese peoms, you need to learn basic Chinese literature and the stories happened in China decades a ago.
